We celebrate the successful PhD defense of Phillip Richter-Pechanski!

In his thesis

“On-Premise Medical Information Extraction from German Doctor’s Letters under Clinical Constraint”

Phillip establishes new state of the art in Medical Information Extraction (MIE), drawing on newest insights and methods in neural NLP. Prominently, his work establishes novel resources such as the CARDIO.DE corpus. Not only does this corpus offer new community resources - it also serves for establishing new SOTA in MIE, drawing on insights into newest neural NLP methods -- while observing the restrictive resource constraints of clinical contexts. Most importantly, the thesis offers new methods to enhance model interpretability when applied in clinical settings. The relevance of the newly established methods is assessed by applying them to real-world clinical application tasks.
