PhD/Postdoctoral Position in Natural Language Processing, Heidelberg University, Germany

The Institute for Computational Linguistics (ICL) at Heidelberg University, Germany, is looking for a PhD student or Postdoc position in the group of Prof. Dr. Katja Markert (to be established from 1.4.2016). Your research interests should be in empirical, data-driven Natural Language Processing in the areas of semantics, pragmatics or discourse, or NLP applications such as timeline summarization, entity linking and Wikipedia enrichment.

This is a full-time university position, with an initial period of appointment of two years with the possibility of extension of a further 2 years. The position involves independent research and teaching (4 SWS per week during the semester). The position is at the rank of Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (German scale TV-L E13 100%), for which salary before tax ranges from around 44,000 to around 63,000 Euros, dependent on prior relevant work experience and marital status.

The position will start at 1. April 2016.

Requirements:

  • an excellent Master's (or equivalent) degree in Computational Linguistics, Computer Science or a related field. For postdoctoral applications a very good PhD.
  • a thorough grounding in at least one of the following: empirical NLP, machine learning, big data, IR
  • good programming skills in at least one of Python, Java, Perl, C family
  • an excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of German is not an absolute prerequisite but would be strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work in a team, openness, flexibility as well as the ability to work independently
  • (for postdoctoral applicants) several high quality publications in NLP (semantics/pragmatics/discourse or NLP applications), IR or Machine Learning.
