Contents

The representation and processing of information about spatial and temporal entities, their movements, configurations, and underlying causal or directional relations is an important ingredient of systems of physical commonsense understanding, temporal and geographic information extraction, multi-modal understanding etc. with applications in diverse domains such as medical time-series analysis, traffic monitoring, environmental risk analysis, logistics and many more.

After an introduction to the most influential theories of spatial and temporal representations in linguistics and cognitive science, the relevant formal calculi (such as Allen’s Interval Algebra, RCC-8 and Dynamic Interval Temporal Logic) and the major datasets employed in benchmarks for spatial and temporal question answering, we will focus on recent developments in spatio-temporal reasoning and grounding in different domains of application.
